Pros and cons of iPA Phonetics app for iPhone and iPad
iPA Phonetics app good for
This app is amazing. It has so many more sounds than a regular IPA app/chart. I really like being able to see the different views when the sound is being pronounced. Im a linguistics major and I did use this frequently in my phonetics class. It really helped me memorize the less used and/or non-English sounds.
The only problem I have is that if I zoom in to the consonant chart, it sometimes makes it so I cant press any of the characters in the bottom row. Other than that, its a fantastic app!
Wow, this is very useful! Not only is the sound of each phoneme provided, but clear video as well. Excellent resource for higher level student of linguistics, beginners or even people trying to master articulation in their own or another language.
Love the app -- the video and audio included with IPA symbols are really helpful to contrast sounds, but when I try to play the quiz, it always only shows the aspirated voiceless bilabial plosive. Even when I select it, it says Im correct, then the next sound is still an aspirated voiceless bilabial plosive.
Also it would be great if you were able to select a group of consonants to be quizzed on so it will be easier to be able to distinguish between certain similar sounds.
Other than that, this is a great app and I highly recommend it to anyone learning about phonetics and linguistics!
Im a masters student studying applied linguistics and Id like to say thank you so much, this is one of the best apps I found for learning IPA.
Congratulations to the authors of this app for their efforts !!!
Some bad moments
The truth is, there is no better IPA reference ap on the App Store. Get it and proceed to have all of your needs fulfilled!
10/10
Love the app. The videos are incredibly helpful. Im unable to get to the lower level consonants (clicks) on the 6+. Not can I advance the sound quizzes. A great app though!
Adding in example words for the symbols would be a huge help, since sounds out of the context of a word are hard to fully understand. Also, an explanation of other IPA symbols and the elements of a written pronunciation would be nice (things like syllable and emphasis diacritics). The app seems to assume you already know IPA and that you just want to study more.
This app has helped me a lot for my phonetics class. Thanks for creating it.
This is the best IPA app that Ive found. I just wish you could choose a subset of symbols / sounds to practice in the "play" mode.
Out of all the IPA apps available, this is definitely the one to get. Its very important when youre learning sounds to see the mouth and tongue as it is making the sound. This app shows clearly where the how to make the sound with your mouth and tongue. The sounds each have a very minor differences and these are clearly shown in a way not seen on other apps.
